Chickenpox vaccine
The introduction of the Chickenpox vaccine (varicella) has resulted in a considerable number of guidelines being published as to who is most likely to benefit from it. Whilst generally chickenpox is not a serious problem in childhood there are rare circumstances when it can lead to problems such as pneumonia or brain infection such as encephalitis. However, Chickenpox in adult life is potentially much more serious. There appear to be several at risk groups and these include women (esp. Less than 20 weeks pregnant), health workers who have not been previously exposed to chickenpox and the general adult population for whom it is a much more unpleasant experience than in childhood. There is copious advice available on government NHS websites , we also recommend www.patient.co.uk . Children require one dose, adults require two doses.
